Action-adventure

These games combine elements of real-time action-based challenges with some element of problem-solving. They may also cross over with RPGs or strategy.

Flight Simulator/Combat

Some of these could go under simulation or strategy too:

  • Air Carrier - Air Carrier is an aerial combat game, aiming to support single and multiplayer, based around plane to plane dogfighting, and strategic use of airborne carriers. It has SWEET looking graphics. It's also under development
  • Carrier 2 - Carrier Command-inspired game. under development
  • Combat Simulator Project - aims to provide high-fidelity simulations of aircraft, landscape, environment, and large-scale combat scenarios. under development
  • GL-117 - GL-117 is an action flight simulator for Linux/Unix and MSWindows. Enter the Eagle Squadron and succeed in several challanging missions leading though different landscapes.
  • Oolite - A space sim based on Elite. Fly from planet to planet, buying and selling goods, shooting pirates or committing acts of piracy. Sweet gameplay!
  • RedShift - RedShift is an open source flight simulator, in the spirit of GL-117. It aims to eventually support realistic civilian and military flight with multiplayer capabilities. under development
  • StarFighter - A space combat game. Participate in 26 missions over 4 star systems as you defend your star system from the war one company.
  • Thunder&Lightning - Thunder&Lightning is a futuristic action flight simulator game that takes place in a large 3D environment. Jump into the pilot seat of your Lightning aircraft and fight against Thunder tanks in a fierce battle for control of the island! Kickass graphics!

  • Alien Arena - Like Quake III and Unreal Tournament, Alien Arena is a fast-paced FPS deathmatch with an array of graphical effects. New arenas and models are being made all the time.

  • Americas Army - Ultra realistic FPS with squad based combat made by the US Army
  • AssaultCube - AssaultCube, formerly ActionCube, is a free first-person-shooter based on the game Cube. Set in a realistic looking environment, as far as that´s possible with this engine, while gameplay stays fast and arcade. This game is all about team oriented multiplayer fun. Kickass graphics!
  • Blob Wars: Blob and Conquer - FPS with nice graphics. You're a blob (well, just a round ball) and you've got to rid your base of aliens. (They explode in a gory mess when you kill 'em!)
  • Code Red - Crazy FPS!
  • Cube - An FPS built on a new type of engine, makes modding easy. Deathmatch and other modes available. Kickass graphics!
  • Excalibur: Morgana's Revenge - EMR 3.0 is a unique scenario based upon the Aleph One (Marathon) engine. It is a first-person action adventure game, featuring an epic and in-depth story line. As a Federation Marine, your mission is to save mankind from the clutches of Morgana and her minions. Through untamed raptor-infested jungles, castle arenas, and war-torn streets of the future, you will wield weapons from all time periods - including the Sword of Power, Excalibur - in an effort to thwart the diabolical plot that unfolds. The EMR adventure, spread across 42 solo levels, weaves a tale of truth and honor, knighthood and bravery, and darkness and treachery. EMR also delivers 27 adrenaline pumped network levels. EMR immerses you in an amazing new world, creating an addictive, fun and unique gaming experience.

  • Passenger - A "cut-down version of multi-player Grand Theft Auto", based on Turbo Esprit, a game which shares many similar ideas to GTA, but was released about 16 years earlier.
  • Open Arena - Game based on the Quake III engine under development, though playable
  • Remorse - Remorse is a game about fighting for survival, honour and friendship. It will feature Aliens, tense gameplay, a solid story with some unexpected plot changes, and much more. under development
  • Sauerbraten - A free multiplayer/singleplayer first person shooter, built as a major redesign of the Cube FPS. Like Cube, it makes modding easy! Kickass graphics!
  • Tempus Irae - A scenario for the Marathon: Aleph One game engine.
  • The Castle - "The Castle" is a first-person shooter style game in a dark fantasy setting. Your main weapon is a sword, so the fight is mostly short-range. The goal is the make the game large and also somewhat interactive. under development
  • True Combat: Elite - A mod of Enemy Territory made by Quake III developers. Team-based combat.
  • Warsow - A new kind of FPS. The base gameplay is focused around the art of movement, meaning moving, speed and tricks play a big part in the gameplay. Another twist in gameplay is Warsow's weapon system.
  • World of Padman - Fight other players across the Internet (the computer's involved too, apparently) with various weapons on different maps around the PadMan world. Toy Story-like graphics (fully 3D, realistic effects) — based on a comic strip.

Marine Combat

  • Danger from the Deep - Danger from the Deep is a free, opensource World War II german submarine simulator. This game is planned as tactical simulation and will be as realistic as our time and knowledge of physics allows. under development, though playable slow development

RPG

  • Empty Clip - Empty Clip is a top-down 2D Action RPG with 200+ different monsters and 400+ different items including weapons, armor, and upgrades. Travel through mansions, dungeons, forests, caves, cities, skyscrapers, deserts, hell, and alien worlds, or just deathmatch with other players over the Internet.
  • Eternal Lands - Free fantasy MMORPG for Linux. According to Charlie, "it is more graphically rich than Daimonin and more complete a game than Planeshift".
  • FreeDroid RPG - A Diablo-inspired game. Play as Tux in a quest to save the world from the murderous rebel bots who know no mercy. FreeDroidRPG comes with an innovative system of magic, with features such as forced casting and over 20 spells.
  • Hero of Allacrost - a single player, 2D sprite-based role playing game under development (demos available) Kickass graphics though!
  • Iris2 - Iris2 is a highly customizable cross-platform open-source 3D client

for playing the MMORPG "Ultima Online" (tm) on Freeshards. (Charlie reports that you can download a trial version of UO and play it unlimited on Freeshards!)

  • S.C.O.U.R.G.E - S.C.O.U.R.G.E. is a cross platform, open source rogue-like game in the fine tradition of NetHack and Moria. It sports a graphical front-end, similar to glHack or Falcon's Eye.
  • SoulFu - cute RPG, cel shading
  • Stendhal - Stendhal features a new, rich and expanding world in which you can explore towns, buildings, plains, caves and dungeons. You will meet NPCs and acquire tasks and quests for valuable experience and cold hard cash. under development, though playable

Space Adventure/Combat

  • Free Allegiance - Allegiance is a free, online, multi-player space simulation game. You pilot spacecraft, flying in a team with other players, defending and attacking sectors in space. Allegiance challenges your tactical ingenuity, your ability to function in a team and your prowess at blowing stuff up. Experienced players take command and lead their teams to victory or defeat. [Looks pretty confusing.]
  • Gate 88 - "A childhood daydream of deep space intergalactic battle inspired by Herzog Zwei, Star Control, Subspace, Homeworld, and Parsec47" … "like subspace but with the ability to build turrets and command fighters." And make alliances, I guess. abandonware
  • Parallel Universe - Parallel Universe is a fan made modification for Privateer Remake 1.2. The modification seeks to expand the playability of the game by introducing new ships, rebalancing certain aspects and adding new campaigns to enhance what is already an excellent game.
  • PiArmada - Clone of Wing Commander: Armada. under development
  • Privateer Gemini Gold - As Grayson Burrows you inherited a small old scout class ship from your grandfather, to start over as a Privateer in a new and sparsely populated sector of the Confederation. Take your chance and become a pirate, merchant or bounty hunter upgrade your ship and experience the hard truth in a border sector where no one has anything to give away.
  • Privateer Remake - just what it says, a remake of Privateer, which was probably some kind of popular space combat game.
  • StarShip Troopers: Last Defense - Based on the Starship Troopers movie. You are Commander Jenkins, born on planet Earth 2007. The year now 2047, and it is your turn to get revenge on the bugs. Space travel became a reality in the year 2010 and Earth spread out far and wide and populated every planet it found. People did not believe in another life form but they were wrong to. The bugs retreated back from the Humans, building up their forces and waiting to strike. under development
  • StressFreeZone - an open-source space-game for Linux and Windows, focused on coop (non-massive)-multiplayer and intuitive gameplay, that is fun to play in short bursts, e.g. on LAN parties. under development
  • The Ur-Quan Masters - Remake of Star Control 2. You control a space ship and must explore a vast galaxy, upgrading your ship, exploring planets, and contacting and fighting alien races along the way.
  • VegaStrike - A 3D Space Simulator that allows you to trade and bounty hunt in a vast universe. A online wiki is available for support. Kickass graphics!

Vehicular Combat

  • Armagetron Advanced - Multiplayer Tron-inspired game with HUD, AI bots, and game modes
  • Automanic - Automanic is a vehicular deathmatch game, hopefully becoming the best of Twisted Metal, Interstate '76, the Burnout Games, and Carmageddeon, focussing on cross-country carnage. It uses Crystal Space, CEL, and ODE. abandonware
  • BZFlag - 3D tank battle game
  • GLTron - Tron-inspired game. under development abandonware
  • Interstage Outlaws - Based loosely on Activision's Interstagee games (drive around, blow up cars?) under development

Arcade

These games normally feature little to no backstory, simple controls, and short levels, but may be surprisingly difficult to "win". Also, they're sometimes 2D but may be 3D. Frequently crosses over with action, puzzle, educational…

  • Battle Tanks - “Battle Tanks” is a funny battle on your desk, where you can choose one of three vehicles and eliminate your enemy using the whole arsenal of weapons. It has original cartoon-like graphics and cool music, it’s fun and dynamic, it has several network modes for deathmatch and cooperative — what else is needed to have fun with your friends?
  • Emilia Pinball
  • FreeDroid Classic - FreeDroid Classic is a clone of the game "Paradroid" which was released on Commodore 64 in 1985. In this game, you control a robot located within an interstellar spaceship consisting of several decks connected by elevators. The aim of the game is to destroy all enemy robots by either shooting them or seizing control over them by creating connections in a short subgame of electric circuits. abandonware
  • I Have No Tomatoes - I Have No Tomatoes is an extreme leisure time activity idea of which culminates in the following question: How many tomatoes can you smash in ten short minutes? If you have the time to spare, this game has the vegetables just waiting to be eliminated!
  • Irrlamb - Your goal is to roll a ball through levels, collecting stuff. It looks like it's pretty difficult though.
  • Jump 'n Bump - Stomp on all the bunnies, but don't get stomped yourself!
  • LBreakout2 - Breakout-style arcade game in the manner of Arkanoid
  • Lemming Ball Z - Like Dragonball Z (balls as weapons, lots of explosions/blood) except using Lemmings… interesting.
  • Liquid War 5 - Liquid War is a unique multiplayer wargame. Its rules are truely original and have been invented by Thomas Colcombet. You control an army of liquid and have to try and eat your opponents.
  • Liquid War 6 - complete rewrite of Liquid War 6 with the same rules. under development
  • Neverball - Roll a ball through dangerous territory.
  • Neverputt - Fast-paced advance golf.
  • Njam - Think pacman, with optional dual deathmatch mode
  • Plasma Pong - PLASMA PONG is a variation of PONG that utilizes real-time fluid dynamics to drive the game environment. Players have several new abilities that add fun twists to the classic game. In the game you can inject plasma fluid into the environment, create a vacuum from your paddle, and blast shockwaves into the playing area. All these abilities have fluid-based kinetic effects on the ball, making Plasma Pong a fast-paced and exciting game. (Windows and OS X releases only, though it works in Wine.)
  • Slingshot - a deceptively simple game, the goal is to shoot the other spacecraft through the field of planets, but their gravity makes it tricky. The effects of the gravity mean that although it's easy to learn how to play, and to enjoy playing, it could take a lifetime to thoroughly master. in beta
  • Super Mario Wars - like Jump 'n Bump, except with Mario characters.
  • TecnoballZ - Breakout with an anime feel.
  • Those Funny Funguloids! - Hailed as a "space-flying-mushroom-picking-simulator". You collect mushrooms, bring them back to your home base and profit! That's the basic idea in a nutshell. It has smooth, appealing 3d graphics and nice atmospheric sound effects. [It really does.]
  • tojam thing - inflate things, fast to make them pop, slow to make them grow, make chains, meet the boss, enjoy the music.

  • Frets on Fire - Like Guitar Hero, except you're using the keyboard. You can also make your own tunes and import songs from GH 1 and 2.

Platformers

2D or 3D games where the player jumps from one platform to another.

  • Alien Carnage - An Apogee oldie. Requires Dosbox to play.
  • Balazar Brothers - A 3D platformer. Will you manage to find your way trough mad levels and free the princesses? You can count only on your agility, your guile… and the unforgettable acrobatics of the Balazar Brothers! under development, though (apparently) playable
  • Blob Wars: Metal Blob Solid - Take on the role of fearless Blob solider, Bob, and attempt rescue as many MIAs as possible in this thrilling first episode of the Blob Wars Saga.
  • DangerMan - an old-school platformer with modern features like line-of-sight, physics, and weapons
  • SuperTux - Clone of Super Mario starring Tux the penguin.
  • Secret Maryo Chronicles - Kinda like Mario, yup.
  • Snowball - Guide Tux the penguin through the levels and help him to bring the snowball save to the exit. Create iceblocks, collect keys, use transporters and beware of traps and monsters! abandonware
  • The Goonies - Remake of the old 8-bit NES classic, only with much better graphics.
  • Which Way Is Up? - a traditional and challenging 2D platformer game with a slight rotational twist. Help a mysterious big-eared salaryman named Guy find his keys in a labyrinth of dangers and bad dialogue. under development, though playable
  • Nikwi - Platformer with cute, old-school graphics (looks a bit like Commander Keen).
  • Windstille - An adventure platformer in the spirit of Turrican, Metroid, and the like. You are placed in a foreign alien world and you have to find your way back to safety. Some times you have to spend your time exploring, sometimes you have to fight off enemies really quickly. under development

Racing

  • PlanetPenguin Racer (aka TuxRacer) - Slide Tux the penguin down a snow-covered mountain, collecting stuff.
  • Road Fighter Remake - In Road Fighter (Remake) you drive a car in a death race between you and a group of crazy drivers. The game is divided in 6 stages. In every stage, the goal is to reach the checkpoint before your car runs out of fuel. Easy? It may sound like it, but there are many obstacles between your car and the checkpoints!
  • Slune - Apparently the point of the game is to deliver AIDS prevention medicine to Africa, but racing and car-crashing is involved….
  • SuperTuxKart - Mario Kart clone
  • Trophy - TROPHY is a 2D car racing action game for Linux. There are many extras which are… er… 'untypical' for racing games. So you can shoot at other players for example.
  • VDrift - a cross-platform, open source driving simulation made with drift racing in mind under development, though playable Kickass graphics!

Space Shooters

  • Chromium B.S.U. - fast paced, arcade-style, top-scrolling space shooter. (Like Galaga but more advanced.)
  • Finity Flight II - Finity Flight II is a high flying adventure tale in the form of a top-down shooter, now open-source. abandonware
  • Overgod - You control a little vehicle in the middle of the screen and fly around and shoot things - a bit like asteroids, but the asteroids move independently and shoot back. You can also upgrade your vehicle in various ways. Built with Allegro.
  • Scum of the Universe - Scum of the Universe is a space trading game that combines elements of arcade and strategy. Choose whether you'll be an independent space trader, firearms smuggler, fierce freedom-fighter or something in between; then, following the main storyline, go through the galaxy from one planet to another, earning money and buying upgrades for your ship.
  • Shotgun Debugger - Shotgun Debugger is a 2D, top-down action game. It is The Future, and your habit of computer network exploration has finally done you in. You are captured and taken to a strange underground complex populated by robot soldiers. Your task is to escape the facility—but the hordes of walking death machines aren't just gonna let you.
  • Solarwolf - Top-down view like Galaga or Space Invaders. Collect space boxes while avoiding bullets and mines.

Worms/Gunbound-inspired

  • Hedgewars - It's like Worms, only with hedgehogs.
  • iteam - Gunbound-inspired game
  • Scorched3D - Based on Scorched Earth, a tank artillery game set in a lush environment. Earn money and buy new weapons and accessories.
  • Wormux - War is declared! Choose a mascot of your favorite free software, pick your (more or less casual) weapon, then try to wipe your opponents off the map!

Puzzle

These games require the player to solve logic puzzles, navigate complex locations such as mazes, or "put things together". They frequently cross over with action-adventure and arcade games. In other words, they're like arcade games, except they take a bit of thinking :)

  • Fish Fillets NG - Linux port of a wonderful puzzle game Fish Fillets for Windows. You are two fish and you must get out of the room using the items in the room. Each fish has a different ability, so you have to figure out when to use which one and where. slow development
  • Frozen Bubble - Make the bubbles disappear by matching similarly colored bubbles
  • FlowFlowMania - Pipe-connecting game, simpler graphics than Vodovod.
  • Gnome 3D Tetris - A 3D version of Tetris.
  • Hex-a-hop - Hex-a-hop is a puzzle game based on hexagonal tiles. There is no time limit and no real-time elements. The objective is simply to destroy all the green hexagonal tiles on each of the 100 levels. As you progress through the game, more types of tiles are introduced which make things more difficult and interesting (hopefully).
  • Magicor! - A puzzle game using "fancy" 2D graphics. The objective is to extinguish fires using blocks of ice. Levels may have one or more solutions, but thinking ahead is the key to victory in Magicor. Inspired by Solomon's Key.

Racing

  • Ecksdee - a futuristic racing 3D game, written using Crystal Space / CELstart. under development
  • Stormbaan Coureur - A racing game that features realistic physics, challenges and obstacles.

  • Ultimate Stunts - a remake of the famous DOS game "stunts", Ultimate Stunts is a 3D racing game that lets you make your own tracks
  • X-Moto - X-Moto is a challenging 2D motocross platform game, where physics plays an all important role in the gameplay. You need to control your bike to its limits, if you want to have a chance to finish the most difficult challenges.

Real-Time Strategy

  • Battle for Wesnoth - Real-time strategy, control villages and stuff.
  • Battles of Antargis - Battles of Antargis is a medieval-like realtime strategy game. You are a hero who was betrayed and you have to unify the kingdom and rebuild the old empire. Old myths will pass your way. under development, though playable
  • Bos Wars - Formerly known as Invasion - Battle of Survival, uses the Stratagus engine. Play against human opponents over the Internet.
  • Dark Oberon - Dark Oberon is an open source real-time strategy game similar to Warcraft II released under GPL. It's got unique graphics - textures created from shots of real models made out of plasticine! [The GUI isn't half bad either.]
  • Boson - an OpenGL real-time strategy game under development, though playable
  • Fortress - Inspired by the game Castles. under development
  • Gamma Low - a multiplayer strategy game in which two teams of light-based life-forms fight for the dominance over a cellular system. The roles in each team are split up into a master commander position (called The Mind), several sub-commanders (called Spirits) and the working/attacking force, the Lights. under development
  • GLest - A free 3D RTS game set in medieval times. Use magic to make buildings and units. The game can be modified using XML and a set of tools.
  • Globulation2 - Globulation 2 is an innovative Real-Time Strategy (RTS) game which reduces micro-management by automatically assigning tasks to units. The player chooses the number of units to assign to various tasks, and the units do their best to satisfy the requests. This allows players to manage more units and focus on strategy rather than individual unit's jobs.
  • Legendary Legions - Hex-based RTS like Wesnoth
  • Qonk - The setting of the game is a solar system of planets. Your goal is to conquer all of the planets in the game by sending ships there. Planets that are under your control generate new ships. Simple AI players are playing against you. As you gain more experience throughout the game, more AI players have to be kicked out of bigger solar systems. abandonware
  • Snowballz - Take command of your army of penguins as you blaze your path to victory! March through snow laden forests to conqueror new frontiers and grow your small army. Ambush enemy lines with blasts of freezing snowballs. But don't neglect your home, invaders are just over the next snow drift! Gather fish for your cold penguins to munch on as they warm up in your cozy igloo. It's a snowy world you don't want to miss!
  • StarShip Trooper: Last Defense - a free 3D RTS game using the Glest engine, it is set in the StarShip Troopers Universe and will have many original and creative features. Defeat the bugs who threaten to destroy Earth.
  • Stratagus - Multiplayer tactics and strategy game in the vein of Command & Conquer or StarCraft. Not being developed anymore.
  • TA:Spring - Spring is a project to create the best RTS ever, based on Total Annihilation and then continuing from there. under development
  • Warzone 2100 Resurrection - 3D realtime strategy on a future Earth. Upon entering the game you land from your transport and establish your base. Here you conduct research, design and manufacture vehicles, build new structures and prepare your plans of global conquest. If the game goes badly you'll end up fighting last ditch battles here to defend your base from enemy attacks. Combat is frenetic!!

  • netPanzer - netPanzer is an online multiplayer tactical warfare game designed for FAST ACTION combat. Gameplay concentrates on the core — no resource management is needed. The game is based on quick tactical action and unit management in real-time. Battles progress quickly and constantly as destroyed players respawn with a set of new units. Players can join or leave multiplayer games at any time.
  • Nuclear Graveyard - Nuclear Graveyard is a 3D squad-based strategy game. In brief, it's Quake with strategy and action points. Very simple 3D graphics. abandonware
  • Savage: The Battle for Newerth - Interesting blend of RTS and FPS called RTSS (Real-Time Strategy Shooter). As the commander in RTS mode, you will tackle resource management, develop a robust tech tree, plan your assault and lead real human players into battle. As a warrior in action mode, you will master many unique weapons, powerful units, and siege vehicles to fight a fast paced battle.
  • Tremulous - Team-based FPS / RTS. Defeat your opponents by working together and destroying their spawn structures.
  • UFO2000 - UFO2000 is a free and opensource turn based tactical squad simulation multiplayer game. It is heavily inspired by the famous X-COM: UFO Defense game.
  • UFO: Alien Invasion - UFO: ALIEN INVASION is a squad-based tactical strategy game in the tradition of the old X-COM PC games. It is the year 2084. You control a secret organisation charged with defending Earth from a brutal alien enemy. Build up your bases, prepare your team, and dive head-first into the fast and flowing turn-based combat. Over the long term you will need to conduct research into the alien threat to figure out their mysterious goals and use their powerful weapons for your own ends.

  • 8 Kingdoms - 8 Kingdoms is a 3D turn-based fantasy strategic game in which players become kings, build their empires and conquer enemy kingdoms.
  • FreeCiv - a free turn-based multiplayer strategy game, in which each player becomes the leader of a civilization, fighting to obtain the ultimate goal: to become the greatest civilization.
  • FreeCol - aims to be a clone of Colonization with added features. under development, though playable
  • FreeOrion - An open-source, space-set, turn based strategy game. Nation-building, tactical combat, grand campaign. under development, though playable
  • Invade Earth - Invade Earth is based on the popular game Risk 2210 A.D.™ by Avalon Hill. It's kind of like Risk except it's more apocalyptic: "The world is at war and you are the commander of one of the warring factions. You control the destiny of your people, your homeland, and your planet. On and above the Earth you must marshal your forces, send forth your troops, hire the right commanders, and crush your enemies. In order to win, you need to build on your classic knowledge of world conquest. Add to that your commanders – the right ones with the right commands – and you can change the balance of power."
  • Spice Trade - You're Abu Al-Qazzaz, a poor young man from Baghdad who's inherited a house and some land. You have to prevent the monolithic European countries from gaining a trade monopoly by spreading your culture and your empire. Can you change history?
  • Xarvh - Xarvh will be a turn-based multiplayer fantasy strategy game, with real-time battles, born as a clone of Simtex's Master of Magic. You choose your race, your magic and your skills. You rule the cities of your expanding empire and command your armies in the exploration and conquest of the Worlds. You'll encounter other powerful wizards, usually your friends on another computer try to kick their ass while they try to kick yours.

Other

  • Game of Bases - Inspired by the Commodore 64 classic Flash Attack. There are (at most) 4 players. Each player has a base and four tanks. The tanks may move, lay mines and fire at other tanks. The base can use a laser beam and launch bombs attacks. Annihilate the enemies!

  • Colonies - Another Civ-inspired game. Planned features include: European power (Portugal), new units, new cargo types, multiplayer gameplay, territories, more diplomatic options, spying, sabotage, unit experience, political cooperations, governors, new buildings and land improvements and much more! under development
  • Cultivation - Cultivation is a game about a community of gardeners growing food for themselves in a shared space. Cultivation is quite different from most other games. It is a social simulation, and the primary form of conflict is over land and plant resources—-there is no shooting, but there are plenty of angry looks. It is also an evolution simulation. Within the world of Cultivation, you can explore a virtually infinite spectrum of different plant and gardener varieties. Everything in the top-down-view game is also procedurally generated.
  • LinCity - Clone of SimCity
  • FreeSynd - Clone of Syndicate, a business monopoly simulation (?)

(Space) Flight

  • Flight Gear - high-quality flight simulator
  • Orbiter - Orbiter is a free space flight simulator that goes beyond the confines of Earth's atmosphere. Launch the Space Shuttle from Kennedy Space Center to deploy a satellite, rendezvous with the International Space Station or take the futuristic Delta-glider for a tour through the solar system - the choice is yours.

Transportation

  • SimuTrans - A cross-platform freeware transportation simulator. You take on the role of operating a transportation company, and your goal is to get goods of various kinds, as well as passengers and mail, from one place to the next.
  • OpenTTD - OpenTTD is a clone of the Microprose game "Transport Tycoon Deluxe", a popular game originally written by Chris Sawyer. It attempts to mimic the original game as closely as possible while extending it with new features.

  • Crashtest - A crash test simulator built using ODE.
  • Construo - Play around with building stuff out of rods and springs, and then watch them fall to the ground.

Sports

  • Free Tennis - Free tennis simulation. Play single player or multiplayer across the Internet. Strives for realistic tactics (the AI is pretty good).

Game engines

  • Aleph One - an opensource game engine based on the code of Marathon 2: Durandal released by Bungie in '95. A number of conversion scenarios are available (Red, Rubicon, Evil, Tempus Irae, Morgana's Revenge, Eternal).
  • Cube - FPS engine with kickass graphics, aims to make modding easy
  • Sauerbraten aka Cube 2 - built on the same principles as Cube.
  • ScummVM - ScummVM is a program which allows you to run certain classic graphical point-and-click (Sierra, etc.) adventure games, provided you already have their data files. The clever part about this: ScummVM just replaces the executables shipped with the game, allowing you to play them on systems for which they were never designed! Compatible games include: Maniac Mansion (which SCUMM was first written for), Monkey Island, King's Quest, Freddi Fish, etc.
